Not had any trouble for a while but now box freezes up and i have to restart it to get it working. Once restarted all is fine again for a day or two and then back to locking up.

That's the first full lockup I've had in ages, I did have to turn it off/on the other day to get the mini guide to populate and I have had a few reboots but as my box carries on recording they aren't a major problem. I was having 3 a day during the Olympics and didn't bother to post about it.
I personally wouldn't buy another 1000s HDR as I'm guessing it would have to be dodgy second hand oneThey all lock up from time to time i.e. won't respond to remote or anything other input. This is easily solved by pulling the plug for a few minutes. It's no different to a computer crash, which is effectively what it is.
I note the 1100S models appear to be more prone to problems if this forum is anything to go by.I know you shouldn't compare Freesat with Sky but during the twenty odd years that I was a Sky customer I rarely had problems. I know one of the comments will be that Freesat is free but that's not true as you have to lay out for the equipment where with a Sky it's free. I just wish that Freesat/Humax took the problem many of their customers are experiencing seriously, as far as I can see Freesat are certainly no better than Sky.

The box isn't free with Sky it's a factored cost as part of the subs. I was with Sky for well over a decade and well remember numerous issues with their EPG updates, I still have the emails to prove it.

Seems I may have solved my restart problem. Both my 1100s boxes were set to remain on constantly, since changing to switch off between 2330 hr until 0630 hr I've had no further unplanned restarts.

Setting a power off timer does exactly the same. , as does using the auto shut down option (3 hrs after the last interaction with the box).

Yes I could turn off the box when retiring but I prefer not to have to go through the rather long winded startup procedure every morning. Having to hide the remote from our Grandson also makes using the auto shutdown extremely inconvenient.

Still baffled, if you set a timer to turn off the box it has exactly the same effect as pressing the power button on the remote or the power button on the box front ie it puts the box into sby and the same effect as enabling power saving which puts the box in sby after 3hrs of no remote activity. No reason you can't set a daily power on timer before you want to use the box daily.
Basically your power off timer can't really be solving the reboot issue as it has the same effect as putting the box into sby manually.

Pressing one button on the remote!!!! Yes I can see how that could be viewed as 'long winded'.

Let me try and explain as you appear to think I'm some kind of idiot. Firstly the reason I followed up on my original thread was to point out that I'm no longer experiencing the daily unwanted reboot/restart problem that I and other 1000/1100s box owners are suffering. What seems to have solved the problem is switching the box off rather than leaving it on 24/7, how the box is switched off/on is, in my opinion, immaterial.
Secondly, by using the auto switch on means you don't have to wait whilst the box restarts which you have to do even if you use the remote.
Putting a smiley after making a sarcastic comment doesn't make that comment less offensive.

Putting a smiley after making a sarcastic comment doesn't make that comment less offensive.I think what people are trying to point out is that the measures you have taken are unlikely to be the reason why the Humax has suddenly started to behave. This is likely just pure coincidence. How you switch the box on or off is irrelevant as is the auto switch. The box still has to go through a boot process. I assume you have it set so that when you press your TV to come on the box boots at the same time? If so it is still booting.
I don't use that method with either of your two Humax PVRs as I only switch them on when we are going to watch something we have recorded. At any other time I use the TVs Freeview tuners.
At the end of the day it was perhaps you that provoked the 'alleged sarcastic remark' by claiming the boot process is long winded.
