Is it possible to sort the channel list alphabetically rather than by freesat channel number?

We don't know what number some random channel might be on so have to scroll through pages of them paying attention to each icon, but we know what letter it starts with.

    Welcome to the Forum

You can set up a favourites list, or if you know the first channel number within a genre you can enter that whilst in the guide, and it will 'jump' to that channel.

ie for children enter 600. music 500 etc

...and if you set up a Favourites you have to...
    Press Guide.
    Press List.
Scroll down to Favourites, which for some strange reason is at the bottom of the list.
    Press OK.
...and do that every time you go into the Guide, since it always defaults to ALL channels.
    ...on second thoughts, why bother.

So I guess you regard this amateur attempt at programming as perfectly satisfactory?

I don't regard it as amateur at all, and yes perfectly satisfactory for me.

Now I understand why, once you get beyond the basics, the EPG on the 1000S is such a poor effort. I don't hold out much hope of the new HB product delivering much in the way of network services. Guess I'll hold on for at least a year to see what the market brings.
