I've connected many times before, but not for a few weeks admittedly.

Has the box (or have you) installed a standard software update since the last time you used telnet? If so you need to install a new version of the custom software to match your current version of the standard software.

Hi Martin, just joined the forum. Classic problem, it seems. Powered down during delete by accident: now stuck with 'permanent' delete. Tried the .09 software trick, and that removed the deleting and permitted recording and pausing live non-HDtv etc. BUT the sound muted on all old HD recordings and on pausing HDtv. Reinstalling the up to date software simply restored the deleting symbol (and froze all recording functions again, BUT unmuted all the old HD recs, and a new one!). Clearly reading this thread one of the files on the HD is corrupt, and I am at a loss as to how to deal with this. Obvious too that Humax aren't going to be any good themselves either. I absolutely NOT a techie, and need hand-holding through most processes, but I see you are suggesting a solution, which I can't follow, I'm afraid. Having torn most hair from my scalp, I'm about to blow £200 on a new one, given mine is already 2 years old.... Can you save my bank balance? In hope, Simon

The simplest solution would be to revert to the .09 software and format the disk which should be a complete fix to the problem. The format will delete the existing recordings. The alternative is to install the custom firmware. The process of correcting the problem you are suffering has got much simpler over the last few weeks due to the work of af123 and xyz321 over at hummy.tv. If all else fails I will fix the box for you providing you pay the carriage costs.

Great! Thanks. Sorry to be such an innocent, but how do I format the disk? It was your ref to the firmware that left me gasping, because I'm sorry but I don't know what firmware is. Happy to try that, but what is it, and where do I get it? Do I download it to a memory stick and load it as I did with the .09 program? Sorry to be so ignorant, but this is new territory for me.... And thanks for the offer of help btw. I'm running the .09 software right now as the best interim solution, but clearly It's just a temporary fix.
    Best, Simon

I would suggest you have a look at the Hummmy WiKi pages, even if you don't want to install the Custom Firmware, as it answers a lot of questions. Although there are differences, in general terms software and firmware are the same thing. If you do load the Custom Firmware, there is a link covering the permanent deleting fix HERE

Thanks for this. I now understand about the firmware and how to get it and load it. So very useful so far. But I'm not sure I'm competent to take the next steps. I don't know what Telnet is, and the Hummy Wiki doesn't explain how to access any of these facilities even if I instal the firmware. Do they magically appear on the TV screen? I haven't got a keyboard attached to the PVR, so how can I perform commands, other than with the up/down/OK control on the remote? How to type in a code to delete corrupt files? I have a PVR and a problem, but no competence whatsoever in computers other than using them, though a modicum of common sense! Sorry to be so dim! Simon

No the way the custom firmware is implemented is that what appears on the TV screen is unchanged. the magic comes from your computer connecting to the Humax either via a web browser or via Telnet.

Thank you, Martin. I think the simplest option is to reformat the disk, as you suggested earlier, unless this can only be done via Telnet. Could somebody possibly explain how I can do this, in very Noddy language, please? As you will realise I don't know what I'm doing here. My PC is based far from my Humax and I haven't a clue how to hook the two devices up, and I'm not really interested in messing around with the gubbins of computers I'm afraid. If I can't clear the disk simply I will pop the 100 yards to John Lewis where they have a dozen new Humaxes sitting on a shelf. Not cheap, but a lot less bother. Sprry but I'm just not a techie! Simon if you are sticking with version 09 for the format it is just a case of the following key presses:

    Menu
    Settings
    System
    Data Storage
Internal HDD should be highlighted, then select
    Format Storage
You then have to confirm a couple of times and input password default is 0000 (4zeros)
