I am just curious as to what type of back up media is best for moving videos recorded on the Humax you want to keep to free up the drive. I did save a 20 min prog onto a memory stick and it took a long time to copy. Would a usb hard drive be better ?

Also, I would like to view the same videos on my windows pc so I can edit them for adverts etc. What type of software and file type rendering would be best to get the same quality playback on the Humax ?

    Thanks.

File transfer to usb is slow because of the decryption of the content during copying. A hard disk is unlikely to make a large difference.

SD files are 576i mpeg2 compressed. There is no need to recode the content except where you make edits. The best software is VideoRedo plus for straight forward editing and VideRedoTVSuite if you want to incorporate DVD creation. Both have free trial downloads.

The TVsuite version will also handle H264/AVC content from a HD source.

I HAVE USED SAMSUNG ALLSHARE TO DOWNLOAD FILES FROM MY HUMAX
TO MY PC. ALLSHARE DECRYPTS ALSO,[SD FILES ONLY] AND ITS
LOT QUICKER. NOT TRIED ANY EDITING OR PUTTING THE FILES BACK
AFTER I HAVE ERASED ORIGINAL FILE FROM THE HUMAX

So as we haven't got a HD TV (we have, just can't get the HDMI input to work which is another long story) if I record SD for say BBC progs, will it still give me the playback quality of a bought DVD or less ? I can't tell the difference personally, but again, we can't view our DVDs in HD.

Similar quality (the bit rate is lower on broadcast TV than you will find on a commercial DVD, so the quality is less).

Recording in HD and recoding to 576i for DVD should be pretty close to bought disks.
