Plans to close BBC Three and move it online in January 2016 have been approved by the BBC Trust.

The trust set several conditions, including a commitment from BBC One and Two to broadcast more BBC Three programmes aimed at 16-34 year olds.
It rejected proposals for a new BBC One+1 channel, which it said would be at the expense of commercial rivals.

It has approved proposals to revamp the iPlayer, evolving from what is primarily a catch-up service to one offering online-first content.

BBC Three will spend 80% of its new £30m budget on documentaries such as Life and Death Row and long-form comedy shows like Bad Education and Cuckoo, instead of lighter formats such as Snog, Marry, Avoid.

The BBC is to cut a 1,000 jobs because of a £150m shortfall in its licence fee income.

An unexpected increase in the number of households saying they do not watch live television so do not pay for a TV licence is blamed for the downturn.

Many cuts are to come from professional and support areas, while management structures will be streamlined.

The BBC's media correspondent, David Sillito says this will save around £50m so more cuts will come.

The BBC Trust has launched a second consultation on the closure of BBC Three and what's to be done with the slots thus released.

This new consultation resurrects the BBC One+1 proposal. Broadcast News says:

The timeshifted version of the BBC’s flagship channel is back on the agenda. The Executive says that Ofcom used estimates from the high-end of commercial impact studies – rather than the mid-range – in its calculation of the effect BBC One +1 would have on the commercial sector.
