Hello I am new to the forum and not very technical. We have a foxsat HDR 320gb with Freesat. It is nearly full. I want to add additional external storage space. I have tried to research as much as I can but don.t understand all of it so am seeking some clarity. At present we only record directly from the Humax Freesat channels directly to the Humax internal Hard disk. I am assuming therefore that all recordings are in SD. I do not envisage using the extl drive for any purpose other than for additional storage. I need plug and play capability as not able to format any discs myself.
Is it better to have a 2.5 or 3 inch disc?
Is it better to power via the usb port or own power supply.?
1TB appears to be max capacity via USB (Humax tech said stick to 500gb)
Can you playback directly from the extl drive? (I don't think you can record directly to the extl drive)
Can anyone recomend a suitable disc that is compatible and reliable?
Grateful for any advice you can give me.

Yes you can playback from a usb drive.

Afraid plug and play is likely to be an issue. The box only supports FAT32 and EXT2/3.

The box will record HD as well as SD. You can still copy HD to usb and they will still play back (despite being encrypted). Note however that FAT32 will only allow files up to 4GB which may well rule out longer HD recordings.

Formatting FAT32 is simple in windows, right click on the drive in Windows explorer and choose format and select FAT32. A bought drive may well be formatted NTFS so will require formatting.

EXT2/3 is a bit more complicated - see

Any usb hard drive described as portable should work OK powered by the box itself. A desktop drive will require external power if installed in a USB enclosure.

You cannot record directly to a usb drive.

    Thank you for that.
So I can copy SD and HD files to the external drive formated to Fat32 so long as they <4GB. I do need plug and play as I do not have access to windows so cannot format a disk myself.
So either a portable disk no power source required or desk top with power supply. Do you know if there is any substantial performance diffenence between portable/non portable?
Lastly there is the size issue Humax themselves seemed rather vague on the point so would a 1TB work in plug and play as I have found a 1TB fat 32 usb 2 portable disk on Amazon

Or if you think there is a risk with 1TB there is one same as above but just 500GB

ITB should be OK. Speed of the drive is not an issue, transfers to USB being a low priority operation are pretty slow.
