Is there any way I can stop the BBC from flagging SD channels as HD.
This means that recordings from SD channels (eg. Channel 001) are encoded as for HD channels (eg. Channel 101). As a result I am unable to transfer files to my laptop, to view away from home.

Complain to the BBC or install the custom firmware.

Ordinarily yes but not when they are incorrectly flagged as HD which has been happening intermittently on BBC for several months. First reports, as I recollect it, were about SD channels on HD multiplexes but it has also been reported for SD only multiplexes.

Edit: This a link to hummy.tv describing the problem Link to hummy.tv

Not if the broadcaster chooses to class it as a HD recording. Could be a mistake or perhaps a deliberate action. It's a fairly recent event. You would not have come across it if it was a long time ago

Martin typed faster than I did.

The key post in the thread linked by Martin Liddle is here. It appears that the BBC have deliberately started flagging some standard def. content for encryption; typically films. The BBC have promised in the past not to do this (see the post after the one linked).
