Interesting...Media server shows up but not HDR-Fox T2...Hmmmmm

Try this...go to Network and sharing in control panel. Open that and click on Change advanced sharing setting. At the bottom of that page is All Networks, click on the pull down arrow on the right..check if 128 bit is being used,,if so change that to 40 or 56 bit option
Save that and then try and see what happens.

Advance settings buried a bit deeper in win8.1

Changed to lower setting and system restarted as requested by win8.

Presentation different but still no plain network shown.

This is a puzzle. You said you can access you Humax through a browser in XP. What do you see when you do that ? But when you try this in Win 8.1, it just times out..correct ?

In XP can browse the files on the humax hard disk just as I would on any computer hard disk. And copy/delete/rename etc.
If I try to access via I.E,. browser from Win8.1 it can't find it.

Firefox on win8.1 also fails (Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.71.)

But I can Ping 192.168.1.71. from win8.1 at less than 1ms.

I guess I do not have a vanilla network installed on the Win8.machine but not having migrated here via vista or win7 I'm at a loss.

I assume your sharing network is "private" and you have not created a HomeGroup ? Also how are you connected to your Humax ?

Nope I can see that you have created a Homegroup. I hadn't so I just created one to see what would happened, and the main difference is I got the options to share files etc, from this pC.

What I meant when I asked if you could browse, was with Internet Explorer or Firefox, can you connect with either of those to your Humax using XP.

I am connected to the humax with an RJ45 cable via an ethernet switch.

Is it possible to set up a 'parallel' private network outside a homegroup.

I don't know about that. I am coming to the conclusion that I am able to do this because I have the custom firmware installed. I am not sure it's available for the HDR-Fox-T2. Mine is a Foxsat-HDR. Perhaps someone with the same device and Win 8.1 can comment.

XP machine can access Humax disk through any browser I have tried no problem. And has been my normal method of loading home movies etc. to avoid disturbing viewing by having to use humax handset and usb.

Xp Machine can access the Users files on the win8 machine.

woodturner has told us that he doesn't have custom firmware installed at which point I gave up commenting as I don't believe what he is doing on XP is possible without the custom firmware.
