    The box needs to be a HDR-FOX-T2, the HD Fox-T2 lacks an internal hard disk.

    I would have expected an HD to play recordings from an FVP via DLNA without a hard drive?

    Pretty sure you need a usb Drive (and Hub) to even install the Custom Firmware on a HD-FOX-T2.

    Why would you need the custom firmware to play recordings via DLNA?

    I never said you did, the post I replied said.

    Also the HD-FOX-T2 with custom firmware (very easy to install) will play back the recordings (SD and HD) from a FVP4000T on the same network.
    This is a fairly cheap option, units on eBay for £35 or so.

    Adding the CF enables sharing HD recordings on other kit that doesn't have IP protected clients.
