Bought a PVR 5000-T a few weeks ago to go in new extension, we've had Humax PVRs before with no problems, but this one is awful, the picture continually breaks up. I phoned humax and they emailed me a copy of a factory reset, still no good, I phoned a couple of days later and was told that the rowledge transmitter was being worked on and would be ok by May 3rd and sent me an email for manual tune and to factory reset after 3rd May.
Still no good and I have to admit I'm getting somewhat fraught.

Still no good and I have to admit I'm getting somewhat fraught. It sounds as though there is a signal strength or quality issue. What is the signal strength and quality as reported by the Humax?
It certainly sounds like the issue is with the coax and/or fittings going into your "new" extension. Have you tried the Humax in the house where you can be somewhat more confident that the signal is good?

You may still have problems next week according to planned engineering works listed on Digital UK website....if of course you meant Rowridge

Picture breakup is a signal quality problem and not a problem with the box.
Don't use "standard brown" TV coax with braided shielding for Freeview as it is next to useless. Use "foil sheathed" or "satellite" coax instead.

We've had an aerial man in to check the signal and he said it was very strong, the same aerial feeds another tv and that's fine, this all started when we "upgraded to a 5000 from the original humax of 6 six yrs old !

The signal could be too strong and be overloading the front end causing the breakup. You could be getting reflections causing interference. The signal strength could be high but the signal quality could be low.
It is essential that you find out
a) what is the signal strength, and
b) what is the signal quality, and
c) is the signal quality stable or does it vary.Until you do everything is guesswork. Check under Settings.

Have you checked that the box autotuned to the correct transmitter, not a more distant one?
