I'm a new user, so do you guys leave the box switched on permanently or switch off overnight?

Overnight in standby, not powered off. If it's in standby, it wakes itself at 03:00 to do some house keeping tasks.

These tasks include check for updates, generate thumbnails, update channel changes and probably a few other things.

If it's switched off or left fully on, the housekeeping doesn't happen.

And it saves you money, in low power sby approx 0.75W, on approx 22W. Based on average usage about £25.00 each year depending on your unit price.

Additionally all the time it's on the box is constantly writing to the hard disc and using the same areas of the hard disk. Firstly to create the time shift buffer file 0.ts, and secondly to create the cached epg copy on the HDD.

    It's a win win situation.

Put your box in low power sby overnight.

    Pros

It will ensure your box has the latest software and channel updates

    It will save you money

It will prevent premature failure of your box Hard Disk

    Cons

None as far as I know.

Thank you both very much. It's reassuring to have this sort of support. Cheers ... Pete
