Problems with scheduled recordings

I recently bought a FVP-5000T to replace my failing HDR-2000T. Of course, there are features I need to get used to (!) but it seems to be acting oddly with regard to some scheduled recordings so I thought I’d ask the experts.

I’ve only been recording via my new box since Monday but, since then, there have been a couple of occasions when, although a programme was set correctly to record, it either does not record at all or only records part of a programme.

When it doesn’t record at all, the relevant line is simply deleted from the schedule list and no recording appears in the recorded items folder (ie it’s not that it appears but says that the recording failed for some reason; it just doesn’t appear at all). This happened on a BBC2 programme (Great British Menu).

On one occasion it was set to record a one-hour (also BBC2) programme and looked to all intents and purposes as if it had done exactly that, but when I watched the recording back, only the first 30 mins had recorded.

Earlier today (Thursday), I used the EPG to select BBC1’s Big Night In to record (7pm – 10pm) and checked that the recording appeared on the schedule list. But I noticed at 7.05pm that nothing was being recorded. The relevant schedule line had disappeared. I tried to use the Instant Record button on the remote to record the remainder of the programme and was given a message saying there was a recording conflict with the original recording, which showed with the “programme currently being recorded” icon. I had to cancel this “recording” (although it wasn’t actually happening) before being able to set the machine to record the programme via the Instant Record button.

I am not at all technically gifted so I hope I have managed to explain this issue well enough. I have managed to record about two dozen other programmes (both single episodes and series linked ones, across all main channels) without problem so I’m pretty sure I’m not setting them incorrectly.

Do you think the problems might be related to the box either failing to pick up, or the broadcaster failing to send, the appropriate Accurate Recording signal? (I do not have padding set up on my machine by the way.)

Or is it more likely to be a hardware fault with my new box?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Do you have any channels in the guide numbered above 800?

Hi Martin. I have 800 (ITV Meridian) and 804 (ITV+1). I can happily get rid of these but none of the failed recordings was set for an ITV programme so not sure whether they could have caused the problem.

I'll delete them both anyway, in the meantime.

It's not necessarily the fact that they are there, but it indicates that you are likely tuned to multiple transmitters, and this is known to cause problems with recordings. A manual tune to your 'preferred' transmitter usually sorts that out.

The experts will need your location (postcode or nearby postcode) before suggestions can be ventured.

Thanks, Trev. I have checked (via Signal Test) a good random selection of the channels I have (I made sure I checked at least one channel on each of the main multiplexes) and, as far as I can see, I am tuned directly to the Mendip transmitter. My postcode is SN2 2DH. I know that the Seagry Court transmitter is much closer but it appears not to transmit either COM7 HD or COM8 HD, both of which include channels I need.

Hope this helps with the detective work!

Currently due to the daily Coronavirus briefings and changes to the frequency of the soaps there is a lot of failed recordings.

If you have checked one channel on each mux is on the correct UHF carrier for Mendip you should be fine - Auto tune must have picked a mux from a different transmitter.

Luckily you were able to simply delete the duplicates.

Using signal test shows the carrier mux channel above the Tuner Bar graph CHXX

Note Signal Info is only shown for tuners in use. To see all 3 you need to create recordings that need all 3 tuners. Thought to be a power saving feature.

OK Graham, thanks. Sounds like you're saying this is more likely to be an issue caused by the Accurate Recording signals than by a fault with my STB. I'll keep a close eye on it for a few days and see what happens. If there's any significant development I'll let you know but, for now, may I thank all of you for your very helpful responses.

The Accurate Recording Signals for The Big Night In were out by several minutes at the start and end of the programme on Freesat and Freeview. (I don't know if this was in all areas)

There have also been several cases recently of programme episodes being substituted at short notice with different episodes which means that one off recordings will fail but series recordings might be okay.
