I have just bought an HDR 1800T for my elderly father to replace his existing 9150t. The BBC iPlayer app on his Sony TV has stopped working and I thought that upgrading to the HDR 1800T would give him iPlayer back without yet another set top box.

I also hoped that I could program the supplied remote to also turn the TV on and off and control the volume. However on trying to set it up I find that this functionality is only available with the HDR-2000T. I assume the HDR-2000t has a different remote?

Firstly can someone confirm that the remote for the 2000T is different to the 1800t and can be programmed to operate the TV.

Secondly is there a third party remote for the 1800t or 2000t that can be programmed to operate the TV. It needs to be as near identical layout to the supplied remote or it will totally confuse him and i'll have to take more photos and screenshots to type up another instruction sheet.

Finally and unrelated to the above. when I installed the PVR and ran through the setup it did not pick up all the HD channels. In particular BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD ITV1 HD etc. I have run through the setup twice more and it doesn't pick up any more channels (I think he is pointed to the Crystal Palace transmitter)

He previously had problems with the Sony TV not tuning in to the HD channels but this was cured by the installation of an aerial attentuator as the local TV installer said it was getting too much signal. Could the box now be getting too weak a signal to tune?
    Many thanks

If you can tell us the signal strength and quality for the BBC SD channel as reported by the Humax we can make an educated guess.

Yes the HDR-2000T is different from the one that came with your dad's HDR-1800T.

There are 2 buttons that are changed and also a small reshuffle of other buttons near the top of the remote.
The 2 remotes can be used with either model.

What you would lose when using a HDR-2000T's normal remote are the 'TV/Radio' and 'Wide' buttons.

Thanksa for the quick reply Martin. How do I ascertain signal strength. Is there an installer option under Settings?

Thanks for that Luke, Loss of TV/Radio would be a blessing as it only confuses him currently. I assume when programmed for the Sony TV you have to press TV button and then the power button to turn on the TV? Similarly to use the PVR controls he would then have to press PVR button first??
Its such a shame that current audiovisual systems are so complicated to operate particularly for the elederly

Do please be aware that the BBC iPlayer on the 2000T at least (can't comment on the 1800T) can be very flaky. I had to give up using it as although it would start a streamed programme it has a very bad habit of kicking you out of it after only a short period and back to the broadcast programme.

Out of curiosity I tried it again only last weekend and sure enough the same thing happened again.
