So the HB1000S can record to an external USB drive but the HDR-1000S cannot?

Seems odd. Why would Humax allow this on the smaller box but not on its big brother?

The HB-1000S does not have an internal drive (and can operate without one at al)l, the HDR-1000S/1010S does. The HB-1000S was a later unit.

Same situation as the HD FOX T2 and the HDR FOX T2. But the HDR FOX T2 does allow archiving.

Yes I know. The HB-1000S is the one I own. I'm just surprised to learn of this difference between the two models. I had assumed - wrongly, it seems - that the HDR-1000S would be able to use the USB port in the same way as the HB-1000S. It seems a surprising limitation, but I suppose they can't be bothered.

    I have both.
I guess that allowing the use of a USB disk on the HDR-1000S would be much more complicated that you would assume.
For example, how would the user choose the recording destination?
It could be assumed that if a disk is plugged in then the recording is to go to it but what if you just wanted to play a video on it.

Not that complicated surely - as long as it's designed in from the start. My ancient Sony DVD/HDD recorder just gives you a button on the remote to select the recording destination. But adding the feature on as a later mod would be trickier, no doubt.

You would also need to copy from one to the other and also to default recording to the internal disk, if the external is not present or not the associated recording disk.

    I agree

Surely it could be programmed to ask once it detects a suitable drive is plugged in.

    Recording and Playback

    Or

    Playback only

If neither were selected it could default to Playback only.

I don't see why covering these options should be difficult. It's what Humax do, after all!

But of course, extra features do cost. That's why it seems a little ironic that the £99 HB-1000S allows you to, for instance, use one USB slot for recording and another for your music, but the more expensive HDR does not.

As freesat control the UI, why would they see the need to record to second, or perhaps, third drive, when the unit has an internal hard disk.
