Is there any way of changing when the darned thing does it's update (that never works anyway?) I've been through all the settings and for the life of me, I can't find it anywhere other than for it to actually do the update.

What update are you talking about and what is it that never works? I don't think there is the setting you are looking for in any event.
I would take an image of your recording schedule before any updates take place as it makes it much easier to enter them in again after they have been wiped clean.
