Does anyone know if the EPG will update if the HDR-FOX-T2 is left on 24/7 or does it only update on a transition from standby to Normal viewing?

When does the EPG Update?

Pretty sure it's a continous process. Easy to test, leave it on all night. Turn it off in the morning. Remove the aerial and boot the box and check the epg for the extra days data. That's how SD Freeview boxes work because the epg is a rolling data transmission for all channels transmitted on each channel (about 15 mins or so for the full data roll round). Unlike satellite there's no seperate data source like the freesat home transponder to give a short full update. Freeview boxes without epg caching take 15-20 mins or so from boot to fully populate the epg.

Most only take 4 1/2 minutes.
Only possible on a box with a cached epg. The complete data starting from scratch takes around 15 mins to get to where you started. A few boxes like the Topfield can speed it up by using two tuners but even then the theoretical best time is 7 to 8 minutes.
Before the firmware mod for the 9200 that introduced epg caching 15 - 20 minutes was normal for a full epg. Still is if you reset the box and start from scratch.

I recollect TallDave (who seems very knowledgeable) had stated over on DigitalSpy (some time ago so it may have changed) that the complete EPG was broadcast in less than 5 minutes.

Not sure but it took at least 15 minutes for my Topfield 5800 to populate the epg just yesterday. Following the Jury sound debacle I set a back up SD recording on it. Couldn't use the HD FOX T2 it has a series recording on BBC1-HD at the same time.
Should be easy enough to check by bringing up the epg immediately after a factory reset and selecting the 7th day.

Not posting exact figure but it is over 5 minutes for full EPG to be broadcast.
