We have used our machine for ~6 years now and recently my wife said she could hear some noise. Being hard of hearing myself I could not, so she recorded the noise with an IPod that playback made with the TV muted.

I could best describe the noise as like a lowish level sizzle,or slight breeze.

I realise that perhaps the method used may not be that good, but could it be a sign that something is wearing out?

Could it be the fan at the rear she could be hearing?
Turn the box around and have a look to see if it's clogged up with dust and put a Hoover over it if necessary.

The rear of the machine looks quite clean, and wife says she dusts it inc. around rear. However, just in case I'll use our mains powered hand vac on the aperture at next opportunity.

If not the fan, then what else to do, could it be? Now wife is describing noise as like the low rumble we get at night from the trunk road hill a mile to mile and a half away.

The only other obvious possibility is the hard disk drive.

I was afraid of that! If it is worth it, I'll make another recording, and upload it.
