I know this is something of an old issue. However, I don't think having HD channels is a must for everyone. I do think its importance or otherwise to the consumer depends on a number of factors i.e. size of room, size of TV, distance the viewer is sitting from TV, quality of panel.
We have a reasonably large lounge and as a result the TV is approximately 12 to 13 feet away. From this distance I find SD even on a 47" screen more than acceptable. In fact C5 is one of the better broadcasters for PQ, at least in our area that is. Our TVs audio is handled by a Sonos set up so again pretty good.
UHD is something different again and here one definitely can see a marked improvement.

Channel 5 HD now FTA on 10964 H. Presumably should be on Freesat epg very shortly
