Graham. Sorry but I think this is getting too bogged down!
The crux of the matter is this.....
If I play the recording directly from the USB stick on the FVP 4000T it has subtitles on!!!
Therefore it has nothing to do with my PC or any software.

Originally I used a brand new USB stick and then I used one formatted on my PC. No difference.

Sorry I don't follow your argument. You appear to have a file where the subtitles are permanently overlaid on the video, like the dog used on some channels (hence the lack of a DVB subtitle data track, therefore there is no way to avoid them. All we can do is attempt to find out how you got such a file. As we have shown, normally this would not happen on a SD file transferred to USB from a FVP-4000T. Neither would you get a ac3 audio track. The recording must have been from a channel using non standard audio and is clearly vintage (4:3). Without knowing what that was there is no way we can even attempt to replicate. The files from a HDR FOX T2 should be identical for the same recording as a pvr simply copies the data stream as is to it's hard disk. Barry apparently can't copy to a usb stick at all, which is why I asked what File System it has on it (telling us you formatted on a PC doesn't tell us which file system you used FAT32, NTFS EXFat etc). If you keep repeating the same irrelevant information and don't give answers to questions that may help in finding out why, how can you expect us to try and help ? Presumably if you play back a a SD file in a format that we expect with a proper DVB-T track, the box should be able to turn subtitles on and off using the remote button.

You have also been asked to record more conventional SD 16:9 from a major broadcaster like BBC 1 in SD that has subtitles to confirm if they play back in the same way.

All Freeview/Freesat files use a transport stream container, though the HD ones are in fact m2ts (AVCHD) files.

Right I have managed to copy a couple of small clips to a FAT32 formatted pendrive (was trying ntfs before)

However still no subtitles, a peculiarity with that programme or do you have other examples?

Interesting so the box supports NTFS on a real hard disk and FAT32 only on USB. Very long SD movies like Gone With The Wind could be a issue (max file 4GB).

I reckon it must be a very unusual broadcast format used by the broadcaster. Certainly not common, could be hard to find another one.

Graham. I apologise if my technical knowledge is not as good as yours but there is no need to get offensive!
I have now recorded another program from Channel 5 and all is OK.
So it would appear that it is channel dependant.

    Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, not being offensive. Ignoring questions you were asked. most would consider is rude. If you read my first post you would see that so many posts ago, I suggested that it was possible the subtitles were embedded in the video, and asked for some basic information. Had you responded as asked, we all could have saved a lot of time and effort. Lack of technical knowledge is not relevant, why else would you ask for help ?
