My boxes are about 6 feet away, and I have never been able to hear them, even in a quiet room.

Mine gets slightly warm on the top back edge and I've never ever heard the fan nor can I feel any sort of air flow, and I'm not deaf, however I have a confession to make, and I tend to forget, I swapped the drive out almost 2 years ago, when I first got it, for a 2TB.
Anybody with custom firmware should be able to check the 'smart' hard-drive statistics, mine runs at 49 degrees celsius. (it almost makes me want to find the old 500GB drive and play)
It's pretty academic as I'm not too sure what you'd do if your standard supplied drive draws too much power and hence generates too much heat. I'm struggling to remember which one, but years ago I used to stand one of my previous boxes upright, like a book, with the power suppply/connection at the top as I wasn't comfortable with the amount of heat. I'm glad to say it never packed up.
