I would suggest that an extended warranty is unwarranted as it is a clear case of premature product failure covered by the Sales of Goods act.

It can be a lot of hassle, though, and it's up to the retailer what remedy you get offered. If the box is already beyond the manufacturer's warranty period, a partial refund is going to be very partial indeed, and for that reason is what will most likely be offered. The RS warranty is good value, in my view - replacement with no quibbling.
