Just bought an 1100S. Right out of the box I couldn't get it to turn on - the power button would toggle the red LED on the bottom of the unit off and on, but no signs of life. Unplugged the power from the back and plugged it in again and it was fine.

Switched it off, went out, decided to test the remote recording. Came back to the same power-up problem, and again had to unplug it and plug it back in again. The recording hadn't happened.

I just tried plugging in an ethernet cable instead of using wifi in case that was a problem, and another thing I did was turn off the power saving (but still put it in standby). The impression I got from the description was that if power saving is on it can take up to half an hour to register a remote record, implying that if power saving is off then it'll be pretty much instant. But no, the test recording I just tried took 20 minutes to happen - it did eventually though. The phone app also tends to be "out of sync" with what's recorded on the box.

It's the power-on problem that concerns me the most. Do you think I need to get it exchanged?

Try turning off HDMI-CEC on your TV
Trade names for CEC are Anynet+ (Samsung), Aquos Link (Sharp), BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony), HDMI-CEC (Hitachi), E-link (AOC), Kuro Link (Pioneer), INlink (Insignia), CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba), RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) (Onkyo), RuncoLink (Runco International), SimpLink (LG), T-Link (ITT), HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, VIERA Link (Panasonic), EasyLink (Philips), and NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi)

Remote record using the app, wakes up the unit every 20 mins to poll the freesat server. Most unpair their units and just use the app as a remote to preserve the life of the harddisk.

    Welcome to our Forum

If you are sure it is a power on/off problem, and not a 'handshaking' issue with HDMI on your TV then I would opt for getting it exchanged.

Thanks! I have a Panasonic Viera and the "Viera Link" is already switched off. I couldn't find the other options it mentioned. I do notice that the TV automatically switches to it when it's powered up, but can't find an option for disabling that.

Didn't have the problem this morning. Maybe it's only occasional.. it's odd though. Will keep an eye out.

Despite being paired to the app, remote record just doesn't work at all unless the unit is powered on. I set one for like 4am this morning before going to bed and it just cheerfully ignored it. You're right in that if it winds up the HDD every 20 minutes that's not a very good way of doing it - I can't even get it to do that, though.

Pity about the remote record, I didn't use it often but it was nice having that option on Sky so that if you see something while out and about that you wanted to watch and won't be back home in time, you can set it going. I thought it might've had some way of waking up to check via RAM occasionally and not wind up the HDD.
One option is to just leave it switched on 24/7 but that'd be very wasteful.
