PhilNot at home till Sunday but I will try and find a file that's long enough.
What resolution was it and what video and audio does the AVI container have in it ? AVI can contain most any video and audio codec.
The free MediaInfo programme will give you this info. Use the View - Tree option to get all the details.

EDIT Found a .mp4 with AVC video and AAC audio 1080p24 file that's over 2hrs long.

didn't think the 1010 would run mp4 !
Only says avi/divx on the network share screen !
But I have just converted a couple of the films to try on the network

Phil.mp4 works fine as does .ts. What matters is what's in the container.
What are they originally - you need MediaInfo to tell. The container tells you nothing. Probably just need to change containers.
Checking my Foxsat for a file long enough, I can stream from that to my 1000S.

Struggling to find a HD TV programme long enough. EDIT Downton Abbey Finale was 122M, I will also record Children In Need this evening.
This might make it clearer re video containers and what can be inside the container.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_container_formats
Example look at MP4 - possible video compression codecs include mpeg2 and mpeg4.
It might also be a size issue, do other long files stop at different times. How large and long is the one that stops playing, could it be around the 4GB mark ?

Ok and thanks,
We will probably be watching the NAS most of the night.
I will try the converted mp4's.
Just a quick question, I have an old HD1000 too, can that do media share?
As if it does or maybe get a update to 1010.
And Also
Do you think an oldish HDR1000, can it be updated too?
Sorry to be a pain, Humax support really did not answer, my questions,
All they did was look on this forum.

PhilOff to the South now. The 1000S has DLNA client but no server so you can;t stream from it only to it.
Check the file size as per my edit.
