I'm probably missing something obvious but how does one operate hd playback? I can find nothing in the manual!

The Foxsat HD doesn't have the capability to use a hard disk. You are probably getting confused with the HD FOX T2 which can use a HDD to record.

Can I check that you really have a FOXSAT HD (and not HDR)? If so there is no recording capability on the HD (which rather explains why it is not in the manual).

You need the additional manual for the HD FOX T2, recording wasn't available at launch.
