I know that there are a bunch of HDD issues in this model but my symptoms don't seem to fit.

Every few weeks my box just completely stops recording programs. No messages are displayed saying that recordings have failed or anything like that.

Apart from that the box seems fine... showing disk usage seems fine etc.

I did have the well known pause failure once ("the function does not work while retrieving data from the time shift buffer") implying a corrupted time shift buffer file, but that was easily fixed by reformatting.

Changing the disk hasn't fixed the problem, the box still forgets to record. A reboot isn't necessary to fix the problem... it just starts recording again after a few days. On the positive side, this could be a "feature" because it means my wife isn't able to record soaps for a week at a time so don't have to sit through them

Could this just be the old SATA cable, and if so, does anybody know a UK based retailer that sells replacements? The power side don't seem to be the standard type at all.

Are there any other workarounds that I could try?

Are you aware that there is a well known problem believed to be due to degradation of a component on the motherboard that makes the hard drive inaccessible? A classic symptom of this problem is that initially comes and goes but usually gets worse and the box stops recording all together. The only known fix is to send it to Digirepairs.co.uk who will do a fixed price repair.
