   Hi All, I've had Humax 1100S for about 6 years, worked OK but last week the video
   went blank and the front display stopped whilst watching a live programme.
   Disconnected and rebooted but no video or front panel display. However,
   I noted that the hard drive (500G seagate) starts up but I can't tell if it's actually doing anything.

   Does anyone have any schematics or technical data to help with diagnostics on this unit?. Or perhaps someone has had similar problem and fixed it.
   I'm a retired electronics engineer and this may help me find the fault, if at all repairable.

   Also, can anyone confirm but it seems like Humax has discontinued this model? all searches on ebay are for used or second hand units.

   Hi kayjay,

   I suspect it is a HDR-1000S you have as the HDR-1100S does noy have a front panel display?

   Sounds like your unit has suffered from a common type of failure and can be fixed by either hot-air gun directed at main controller (not tried myself), or by disconnecting main circuit board and placing in a pre-heated oven @ 125C for approx. 10 mins (has worked for me).

   Yes its a 1100s and you're correct the 1100s has no front display, I meant to say the front status LED. It's actually only visible by looking underneath the box at the front.
   I re-checked it's function and this is what happens.

   1, apply power -- shows red
   2, Press power button or operate remote -- red goes out, after ~10 secs turns blue
   3, disk starts up. Blue LED stays on.

   There is no video output on the HDMI connector, changed cable, changed monitor.
   Although HDMI input on TV "sees" a connected source. This just maybe d.c. voltage on certain pins.

   Haven't tried connecting to the video out phono connector as I don't have a compatible cable at the moment, but may be worth trying I think. There is also an SPDIF optical connector but I think this maybe just an audio output, not sure, couldn't find any documentation on this.

   Clutching at straws here but...............I am not familiar with the 1100s but I would hope that you ruled out the possibility that there is a setting where you can choose which output to use and it just needs resetting to HDMI.

   Hi kayjay,

   I would definitely connect the Video Out phono connector to the TV as I suspect it will work fine and the problem will be with the HDMI output (have also seen this).

   To try to fix this will need either of the methods mentioned earlier.

   P.S. I removed heatsink and scraped off old paste before inserting into the oven and applied fresh thermal paste afterwards.

   Hi Kacout,

   I sorted out an S-Video coax cable and an old TV from the attic which has a S-video input.
   Connecting the 1100s s-video output the tv I was able to see the video again. ALso the
   box responds to all remote control commands and I was able to play a recorded video!.

   The quality of the S-video is poor compared to HDMI, but I was able to connect both S-video and HDMI to the TV and confirmed that selecting HDMI has no signal, but S-video is fine.

   This must isolated the fault to something on the HDMI signal path?. Would you think that the heating trick would still work on this fault?.
