Just wanted to ask, does the box come on then without a hard drive inside?

Yes it does, it just warns you that it can't find a hdd.

Well I did put the origional disk back in it. But it does boot OK now without messages. The problem was only after the initial controller failure - I don't understand why. Aftere the failure initally it was not connected to a display and I went by the front panel display - the box would boot and then shutdown - knowing well the timing of the process afeter about 25 secs I tried pressing OK - and the BBC1 came on the display.

I did try and boot it with the Power lead connected - still problems and also the sata lead disconnected. But perhaps it needs more than one fail. I have no idea if it will do this without my fiddling around

Anyway I now have a FOXSAT HDR - HD Edition!.
Replacement HDR is on it's way.

Slightly off topic, I have a old JVC DR-MX1S HDD Recorder, DVD Recorder/Player and VHS Video Recorder/Player.
    See Here

Do you think if I removed the HDD the rest of the unit would still work?

Only one way to find out, try it. However DVDR's tend to have a more intimate relation with the hdd. You can't for instance just stick a larger hard drive in and find you have more storage space.

I have little use for it now, except as a DVD player. So was wondering if it would still work without the HDD. I could then use the HDD for something else!!!!

It takes a long time to start if it has been unplugged, and a slow boot as well.

Just hoping that I can do away with all the 'slowness'!

    Update.

Opened up the machine, took power supply off HDD.

Plugged in, switched on but it stuck saying 'Loading'. Left it for a few minutes, no change. Unplugged, restored power to HDD, switched on and booted fine.

Assumption is then that the machine needs the HDD to start!

You need to try diconnecting the data cable, probably ide in your case.
