My HDR1100S displays some .JPG files stored in My Media/Photos fine but with others, it just hangs and displays the rotating circle suggesting it is having difficulty in displaying the file. The same happens with pictures being opened from my PC on my home network. The only difference between the files seems to be the file size - those that display OK are from a camera outputting small files whereas those that won't display are from a DSLR outputting much larger files. So the question is, does the 1100S have a limit on file sizes it can handle or is there some other issue going on?

Yes there is a limit. Use a windows paint package to re-size to 1920 pixels horizontally for landscape images and 1080 vertical for portrait images.
Unless you have a 4K display there is no point in having larger.
