    To be honest I had a 250GB SSD "hanging around" so used that rather than buy a dedicated mechanical HD.

    Then that's the best reason that I have heard for using one. The other reasons don't hold a lot of water. ;=)

    I also have a spare 250GB SSD as a result of needing more space as windows 10 gets more and more bloated so I replaced the original drive with a 250GB Samsung SSD and used macrium reflect to image the original drive. And used the the original drive in a tiny usb 3.0 enclosure. It's now a fast way to copy files to other devices.

    I might have done as the OP did had I needed a external usb recording drive.

    The OP may have been in a similar position. Both my TV and a VBox Ip network network server can record to USB. Thanks to surfeit of pvrs not needed.

    I have the Toshiba mentioned above in one of those enclosures double sided taped to the back of my LG TV for recording/timeslip purposes.
