Just put the 320Gb in the box (as is, single volume NTFS) and it spun up but it didn't offer to format it or recognise it in settings.

That may indicate you have the recognised component failure on the mother-board.

Box was bought Dec 2012 so early for that fault, but it does seem to be that or something similar.

Just to make sure I plugged the 320 into the front USB port and it worked fine I then let the box format it and put it back inside, it spun up but unfortunately still not recognised.

So I think it has had it !
