The back button on the remote does not appear to do anything.
Certainly not go back to the last channel.
Is this an oversight on the part of the bods at Humax, or is my equipment faulty?
Or am I missing something?

The Back button is for use when using the EPG, for example to back out of a recording, or to back out of the channel info display. It is not intended as a channel change button.
It also functions in setup menu's.
OK, it functions pretty much everywhere except it does not act as a channel-back button.
So the Humax developers forgot to include a Channel Back button!
Suspect hardly anyone would use it. Most would want to go to another channel.
In 6 years of use I've never once thought I needed a channel-back button.

I guess it depends what you're used to and what your 'viewing behaviour' is.
Having previously had cable TV via Virgin, whose system does have a 'channel-back' function, I still really miss it on my Humax (and that's after 4 years).

You may miss it but I'm struggling to come up with a reason as to why you'd need it. I think (though I may well be corrected) that I can do this with my Youview box, though if if I am correct I've never used it.

If you're watching one channel, but keeping an eye on another, for whatever reason -- eg, a sporting event* you're quite interested in following, but don't want to actually watch all the time.
* football match, marathon, tennis match, or a flat stage in the Tour de France.
Given the results that a quick web-search for 'previous channel button' finds (with the results often about why such-and-such a system doesn't have it, or workarounds to fix such a lack), I think more people like/use 'previous channel' functionality than you might think.
