Browsing through the guide today I selected the BBC News Channel which I wanted to watch.

The options given were to CLOSE or RECORD WHOLE SERIES.

This situation doesn't seem to be documented in the user manual.

Selecting CLOSE just takes me back to the previous channel that was being watched.

Any advice or comments would be much appreciated.

    Here is another attempt

Resize the file so the largest side is 1280 pixels

I've seen this on my HDR1000S. It happens at the transition point of one pgm to another on the EPG. Example... it's 20:00 and the EPG is showing PGM A which is just about to end but is still showing as NOW, PGM B is the next pgm on the schedule and is shown as NEXT. The EPG then transitions to PGM B as NOW but for some reason if you select it you get that message. It appears that the code has not caught up with the display transition. Wait a few secs and the PGM B becomes selectable as normal.

If the programme is current, you normally get

Watch Live or Watch From the Beginning (which of course loads iplayer).

Thanks for your reply but I don't think that this is the case in this instance. The programme started at 14:00 and it was after 15:00 when I selected it.
