You should be OK without. I hope to get a 4K TV end of this month, so will be in a better position re compatibility. My AV receiver can scale hdmi inputs to 1080 or 4K.

1080i holding so far. I got the LG 43 UM7400PLB 4K tv. Good picture and interface and does Airplay 2 but no Apple app as promised
