Can anyone with a working unit confirm whether or not they can hear the HDD spinning when it's on?

I think you should be able to hear the hard drive spinning but the update would work without the hard drive connected. You are correct that the update is written to flash memory on the motherboard. Can I ask where your parents bought this box from?

I thought so regarding the flash memory. Thank you for confirming Martin.

Wpd, to get your pvr booting up try removing drive & see if you are able to update. John L

Thanks for the info. Yes, it was bought from IJTDirect.co.uk in Nov 2021 - I still have the invoice.

If you still have receipt, then take back to store, as once void sticker is removed, you invalidate warranty. I didn't realize it was a fairly new. New Humax's are sold with a 2 year warranty. John L

I thought it was one year warranty that could be extended to two years if registered within 30 days of purchase?

I thought it was a 2 year warranty as standard. I know Humax direct do refurblished with 1 year warranty. Maybe it's changed? I always took advantage of registering my humax's. Long time since I purchased a new one. Good point Martin. John L

Just to update all the kind folk who tried to help, I got nowhere with the device. But Humax honoured the warranty and switched it for a new one. As soon as I plugged it in, I could hear HDD whirring, so I'm pretty sure I had a dodgy HDD on the old device. But we'll never know for sure! Thanks again all here who offered advice.
