I have decided to buy another LNB and make more coax tails, and fully wire it up, and seal it with the silicone sealant
( http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/boots.htm )
Then I can disconnect the patching in the loft, push the cables through the vent hole, then go up the ladder and replace the LNB and its tails all in one go. Then repatch in the loft and do a final alignment/signal check and if necessary tweak the LNB orientation.
This means I can be sure I'm not using coax which has got damp or anything.
For patching in the loft f-connectors and m-m barrel makes a good connection.
