    Hi IslipHumax

I won't quote your posts as it's getting a bit complicated.

Firstly, in my experience over many months of trying and many discussions with Humax Tech Support, you won't be able to get the Humax SMB file transfer to work with Vista or Win 7.

As you have found, you can see the Humax on the Network as a media device and you can also map to most of the Humax HDD folders using UNC mapping e.g \\YourHumax\Downloads ...... but you can never map to the topmost folder and this folder is the only one which will enable decrypting of the SD files. I can't remember all the folder names but I have posted them in a thread months ago.

If you can borrow a Win 10 PC, you will find that the Humax appears as a file server in "Computer" as well as the media server entries in "Network". If you open the file server you can then download decrypted SD files.

It's the Humax box that needs to operate as an SMB server and not the PC which is the client in this set-up. To configure the Humax SMB server you have to go into Settings / Network Settings / Network Server and make sure that the Network Server is On. From your screenshot you have clearly already done this.

To turn on the SMB server go to Network Settings / File Share and turn on SAMBA Server.

One of the FVP4000T issues is that when you wake up the box from sleep the network and file servers do not always wake up and you have to go into Settings, turn them off and turn them back on again. However, with Win 7, I'm afraid that you are not going to see the SAMBA file server under "Computer" anyway whatever you do.

I have a NAS and the slightly more basic 2000T and TBH if I want to move a file from the Humax I pop in a micro usb thumb drive 60 gig and use that, just as easy.

It depends what you want to do with the recorded file. If you need to do any post-processing (like advert removal) you need to get it onto the PC. Copying to a USB drive and then re-copying to a PC takes a very long time with the FVP-4000T, particularly if you have a large number of recordings to be processed.

Well what I do is select the programmes I want to copy at bedtime and then retire for the night. Next morning the programmes are all copied to the thumb drive. All that's required then is to pop them in you computer and if it's a computer worth its salt it's done in a matter of minutes.

There's no need to overthink matters like these, life's simply to short. TBH I don't even remove the adverts, simply not worth the effort when a quick skip with a remote whizzes through them. I just store the programmes on my NAS and they're there for future streaming.

Thanks for the replies - disappointing, though not surprising. If it really was as easy as Humax purport, this thread would never have been started!

My reason for wanting to copy recordings over to the PC network is only so that I have somewhere to store them when the Humax HDD gets full. After only a few months, it's fine, but I would guess in a year or so I will need to move files off the HDD.

I will have one more go with Humax tech support, but after that not sure whether to take it further or not.

In the meantime, I will get a USB drive and test it out.

It really is as simple as I described. If our dog had opposable thumbs I'd leave it to him.

Hi, 'Out there somewhere' is not very helpful. If you know how to transfer files from a Humax FVP4000-T directly to a PC, I would really appreciate you sharing that knowledge, otherwise it looks like I have 2 options:

    1. Transfer via a USB stick as you have suggested
    2. Return the Humax and get a different PVR, but will that be any better?

As said previously don't over think this. Just before bed time pop the USB thumb drive in the PVR select your progs and they will be ready for you the following morning. Simply transfer them to PC then - it's quick painless and easy.

Mmmm, I bought the Humax specifically because I am not a 'techie' and no-one said that was a prerequisite for copying files! Humax told me that it was 'simple to copy files across to a PC'. It clearly is not, otherwise this post would have a simple, one line reply of how to do it.

Humax Tech support today have told me to set up an FTP client, as that will work. Now have FileZilla installed, and can now copy the recorded files from the FVP4000-T to my PC!

Great, BUT, it will not play on VLC - apparently just copying via FTP does not de-encrypt the file, unlike via USB. Yet another fail from Humax.

Tech Support keep trotting out the same old rubbish I'm afraid.

I covered all this with them months ago and sent them versions of files copied by both mapped drives and FTP to Vista and Win 7 PCs to prove to them that none of the files are playable using any publicily available media player. Unfortunately, they either just can't get their head around the problem or they are just keeping their heads down and hoping it goes away.
