Dino, did you mean try it as a network mapping? it didn't work, I can access the web interface and settings fine using that ip but nothing else

No, I meant from 'start' 'run' then type in the window, but mapping is the same.
Are you sure Samba is running on the HDR ?
Check under 'Service Management'

ok tried it as a dos cmd but \\192.168.1.2\ is not recognised as a command or did you mean to ping it? Service management shows samba as "ON" for auto startup and status

No, I didn't mean from a DOS prompt, just 'start' 'run' and then type \\192.168.1.2\ directly into the window and click ok.

Strange, it almost seems like Samba isn't running on the HDR. Try using the Web browser and Service Management to stop and restart it. (just click once on the blue 'ON' under the status column for Samba. It should slide to 'OFF' and you get a message saying
'Stopping Samba..... done'
Give it a moment, then click on 'OFF' and it should slide to the blue 'ON' with a message saying
'Starting Samba.... done'
Then try 'start' 'run' and put
\\192.168.1.2\
into the box and click ok.

Time to check firewall settings. XP - don't remember that far back - what security software are you running?
Confirm ping 192.168.1.2 responds OK
