It's OK Gonzo, after several hours no change in the status. After re-connecting Ethernet all the above changed to Watch Now and a new Available soon entry arrived. The catch up epg must now need the internet connection.

Maybe that's how they achieved the excellent speed-up of populating the EPG. Minimised the amount of data to be written.

Why, is this a change from behaviour before the update?

It has changed sometime, not sure if it's the latest update though. At one time the box used up prodigious amounts of data when connected to the internet whether or not you used catch up. As a result I ran for long periods with no internet connection and the catch up epg still populated. If I wanted to actually use catch up I stuck the cable back into the nearby network switch.

No, I was referring to the very obvious speed-up of the EPG resulting from the latest update, and speculating that maybe that update also contained the requirement to have the internet connection active for previous pgms to be seen in the EPG. The data for previous pgms only being populated when the internet connection is active. All supposition.

Interesting. The data use was presumably related to the "Showcase" feature?

I only realized a couple of days ago that the Showcase screen also goes back in time, linking to previously Showcased programmes now available on catchup. I'll see how long it takes for this to stop being populated after the box is disconnected.

Thanks guys for all your feedback, but as I have said my box has never had any form of internet connection. So am I correct in assuming that this is the reason I am unable to see anything listed in the "earlier" listings when using the program guide?

Yes that seems to be the case, but why would you even want to?
It's been baffling me most of today as you don't have it connect to the internet so why the concern about not seeing anything in the earlier guide?

I understand your confusion gonzo, so let me explain. I just thought I could check programs I may of missed, then on selecting that program find out the times and dates when they may be repeated, as you can do in the normal program guide. Just that it would be a handy feature for some people. I am sure I saw listings a couple of months ago when I was playing around with it, so maybe the latest software update has changed that. So no more confussion I hope gonzo and you can rest easy tonight Thanks for your help.

You can find what's available by simply using the website of the appropriate catch up service. It will have more entries than freetime does anyway. And you can watch it on your PC/Tablet whatever you are using to post here.

The Freeview Guide at http://www.freeview.co.uk/whats-on/tv-guide links directly to catchup. Freesat might consider something similar.

I've found this discussion interesting and informative. Thanks to those commenting, and to Teb5 for asking the question.
