    You need to take the remote apart and clean the contacts.

    Once you have it apart, you probably don't need to peel off the foil cover from the central block of buttons, they don't usually get mucky as they are better covered.

    I have cleaned the other contacts with a clean cotton bud. There may be fluids you can use, but I have not tried any. The rubber contacts should not be at all shiny when you are finished.
