Checked the HDR 1100S again as stated in post #9 same results as before.

I have seen 'no items' displayed before, but only for 2 seconds or so before results are displayed.

Sorry for delay, had to go out. BAR and NEW both return "No item". However, power off and on again Search shows plenty of results for both BAR and NEW !?

...and coming out of Search and into TV guide and then back to Search - nothing found again, surely this has to be a problem with the software

We all have the same software. Make a note of your recording schedule (photograph it with a digital camera), you will need to re-enter it. Now do a reset to factory defaults. (default password is 0000).

I thought that might be the case. I will try that at a more convenient time and report

    Thanks

OK Back on the case and I believe I have found the answer. Although the box said it was connected to the internet, in fact it wasn't. I set the connection type to automatic (I had had to connect manually, originally) and rebooted the router and now it all seems to be working. Another clue I may have missed earlier was that the On Demand services were not available either, and now they are. If the Search fails again, the internet connection will be the first thing to check.

Update: It's been on and off and into and out of different functions and it is still working - whoopee!

    Many thanks
