Faust - 38 minutes ago » ...the practice of unplugging a PVR and router at bedtime. Why would you do this, especially the router?
Equally why not?
I have an extensive network covering 8 rooms, with switches in each room. I only power up the room switch when required and I like to switch off the router (together with my PC, printer etc) when there is a prolonged period of non-use. I have no need for it during that time. So I'm looking for a cogent reason why I should not do this.Well in my particular case the router is combined with my Time Capsule so shutting that down is not what I want. Then there is my Mobile phone. We don't get a good 3G signal in the house so my phone uses an app that routes 3G via wireless, so again the router is needed. Next there is my Sonos soundbar which relies on wireless, then my NAS needs wireless not forgetting my Apple TV and DLNA devices. Reconnecting all these devices successfully after a router power down can sometimes be problematic.
I want a connected home not a disconnected home.

Sorry, your argument fails completely as it relates to me.
Only one example, why on earth would I want my mobile phone on when I go to sleep, in fact that's another device I switch off at night.
I never have problems connecting my many devices after a power down (except of course the latest problems with the Humax), but then they are all ethernet connected, and my home is fully connected when I want it to be.| Sun 5 Oct 2014 21:00:28 #373 | -

I suspect if you polled a thousand people if they switched off their routers at night only a tiny tiny percentage would do so. Mobile phone on at night you ask. Well one of our daughters is currently working abroad so like any parent you tend to worry (or at least the wife does) we don't have a phone upstairs. If my daughter wants to access data off the NAS whilst abroad the router has to be connected. Don't tell me, you would power down the NAS too?
Sonos devices can be problematic if used with Homeplugs etc. as they are specifically designed to be wireless.
Oh, BTW Mac computers are meant to sleep not shut down so that too needs the router connected. You really need to get into this connected world.

As well as my HDR-1000S I also have a HB-1000S in the bedroom (with disk attached). From time to time in the night, on visits to a small room, I have noticed it is powered-up in the wee hours. There is no indication on the unit but I see the reflection of the network port LED on the wall. (normally off in standby).
No idea what it is doing, but the unit is rarely used and for sure it is not frequent.Be interesting to see if the graphics return overnight.
Answer: no.

No idents, Showcase is there but with no idents you don't know what channels the programs are on and I've got the you need to connect to broadband message on the On Demand section.

Showcase & OnDemand both unavailable, I'm back to getting the connect message.
It was all working fine for a week or so.
