Returned home. Switched on after a complete power-off for 3 days.
    I have the dreaded:
"Connect a USB hard drive (HDD) to the box to be able to record programmes and pause live TV"
So it seems I have a knackered HDD

Why do you think that? It is more likely that you have a known fault in a component on the motherboard. Humax will offer you a replacement refurbished box at a special price of (I think) £55 if you ring them up and describe the fault.

    I have the dreaded:
"Connect a USB hard drive (HDD) to the box to be able to record programmes and pause live TV"
So it seems I have a knackered HDD (although I can still hear it powering up). There are several options.
    1 Record onto a USB pen. I have a 256Gb available.
2 Attach a portable USB drive. Question: will the Humax provide enough power ?
    3 Replace the HDD.
4 After (3) attempt to recover the data from the 'dead' HDD using proprietary disk recovery software.
    Advice please.

    As Martin says contact Humax.

    Of the options you list:
1 & 2. Not possible - Recordings can only be made to the internal hard disk. The "Connect a USB hard drive (HDD)" message is for the HB-1x00S models which shares the same firmware.
    3. The same message will continue to be displayed.
    4. Somewhat doubtful. No one has yet tried, HD recordings will be encrypted and can only be played back by the unit that recorded them.

Thanks Martin and Repassac. It seems this is a 'known issue'. One further question. If it is the motherboard fault, will my old recordings still be accessible when the unit its returned, or is the 'repair' so drastic as to change the BIOS / encryption handshake (or whatever).

Humax no longer repair units with this issue, they will offer a replacement @ £55.00, so unfortunately your recordings are lost.

Oh dear. So just to be sure (and save me searching the forum) is there any way to recover the encrypted files on the old HDD ? If not, it seems to me a very poor system. I made the recordings for my own personal use -- but they are now 'locked'. It's not as if they are commercial 'ripped' DVDs ! Sorry if this is an old chestnut.

I am pretty sure there is not. The encryption requirement comes from the broadcasters.

OK. So looking forward I have three options.
    1 Repair the HDR-1000S.
    2 Buy a new HDR-1100S.
3 Buy a new HB-1100S and use an external HDD.
In a few words, what are the pros and cons of options 2 vs. 3 ?

    2. Has built-in Wi-Fi. Same Firmware as HDR-1000S. No SCART connection.
    3. Only single tuner. Need to add cost of chosen disk size plus caddy. Recommended to use AV/CE spec drive. If power consumption within USB limits it is possible to use unpowered caddy (which I do) It is nice not having to separately power down an unpowered caddy.

Has anyone used 'digirepairs.co.uk' ... "Digi Repairs UK Ltd is happy to announce that we are now the UK and Ireland specialist repair centre for all Humax Freeview, Freesat and Youview products."
It's either them or Humax themselves.

No, but I believe the Humax offer includes delivery in both directions.
