It's fixed.
I did a Factory Default. The icons were still greyed out but I could now select them.
I selected the first and was surprised to find it was the ITV Player. I had to enter my email and password and it worked.
I then found that I had the icons for all the players and the first was now BBC Player.
After quite a while of no icons for the players in either of the places where they should be, I decided to bite the bullet and follow the above advice for Factory Default.
It seems to have worked, though it meant re-establishing a number of things - the schedule (took photos first), favourites and a few other things. Unlike John's report above, my player icons returned straight away.
Just hope it keeps going this time. If it fails again, I know what to do and I am forewarned to try and remember what I might have done to trigger it.
Clearing the cookies got mine back the one time they disappeared
Clearing cookies brought back the channel logos for me when they went missing, but not the player icons.
