When I have watched a program, I hit the back button so I can delete it, but it then goes back to the underlying TV channel, so I have to scroll through my recordings, to find it, & delete it.
It doesn't happen all the time, but quite often.
Is there another way of deleting a watched program?

Are you sure you are pressing the back button and not the X (exit)?

I know that sometimes the controls don't always do what you expect and I am pretty sure that this was covered years ago when the 4000t/5000t first came out but I cannot remember if there was a specific solution other than the old fashioned full power down/wait/reboot.
I have just (and earlier before asking the question) tried several recordings and different combinations of ff/rw/pause/play then either stop (square) or back and it worked fine every time (guarantee that later it won't).

I didn't know that I could use the square to get the delete option. Thanks, but what do you mean "full power down/wait/reboot." Is this just unplugging, waiting, then plugging back in & switching on?

    Yes, standby/pull the plug/wait/plug in/reboot.

Tried the "square" option. Worked 4 out of 4!

I think the "square" is more accurately called the "stop" button (according to the user manual). I did some experiments on the best button to use some time ago and came to the conclusion that none of them are 100% reliable for taking you back to where you can delete it. The stop button seemed to be a bit better than the other candidates.
