Martin Liddle you say "Running as an administrator isn't enough; you need to run with administrative privileges;" I started the command prompt by right clicking and selecting Run as Admin... is that not enough?

What you have done is correct. When you plug the caddy into the computer do you see the drive in Disk Management?

    Hi,

When I connect the drive to the USB port Windows Device Manager shows ASMT 2115 USB Device under disk drives.

    Thanks

    Paul

But do you see anything in Disk Management?

Sorry, Yes, when I go into Disk Management there is a Disk 0 which covers the C: drive, a recovery partition and a (Disk 0 partition 1). There is a Disk 1 identified as Removable but No Media.

So Windows can at least identify there is a hard drive attached and the drive number is 1. You might see if humaxcheck sees anything.

    HI,

Thanks for your help so far. If I run Humaxcheck I get the following:

    humaxcheck version 0.1W (c) xyz321
Writes to the Humax disk are disabled
    Partition table: Permission denied

    Thanks

    Paul

I assume you ran it with administrative privileges? It would need xyz321 to tell us exactly what that message implies. I would be tempted to use CrystalDiskInfo to see if you can retrieve the SMART data which would give us a clearer idea of the state of the hard drive. As you appear to be at a dead end the last thing to try would be humaxcheck 1: -p -w

    Hi,

Yes, I was running in administrator mode.
I tried humaxcheck 1: -p -w and all I got was Partition scan: permission denied. I also downloaded and installed CrystalDiskInfo and it recognises the C: drive but nothing else.
I also tried Asoftech Data Recovery - no idea if it is any good or not, it came up in a Google search when I was researching problems with the harddrive. It only sees the C: drive.

Any other suggestions? Does this mean the drive is completely dead?

    Thanks for all your help.

    Paul

    Hi,

I also tried all the tools reviewed on this website https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/the-best-free-file-recovery-software
with no success - didn't expect much really but worth a try I thought. None of them even acknowledged that the drive was there.

    Thanks

    Paul

The filing system is different to Windows, so it won't be recognised.

Just don't initialise/format it with windows, or it's asta la vista with your files.
