chrisberry - You share as a (local) network. Homegroup limits it to PC's in the homegroup.

My top level folder structures is:
    Music
    Videos
    Pictures
    Playlists.

Make sure you are only running one DLNA server per host.

OK I am now getting to grips with the HDR 1000 - thanks for everyone's help.
I now have configured my PC (still using Homegroup) such that I only share the public folders. This has really speeded things up and files now appear where one would expect.
However, I still have a problem, I can play downloaded WVM BBC TV programmes on my laptop OK. When I try to access them through the Media Server they never complete loading. Not a problem I thought I will copiy them to a USB stick and play them from there. But all I get is a multi-coloured moving screen.
What am I doing wrong? They should play from the USB shouldn't they?

Depends on the file format, they may need conversion or it could simply be down to drm protection.

Download a copy of MedianInfo and open one of the files. The software has a tree view giving full details of the file content. If you export the data to a text file it will give a better idea what the files contain.

Paste the text into a reply.

What is the file type and encoding?
Humax have not said what formats are supported - The DLNA standard requires only MPEG2 (MPEG4 being optional) see DLNA Media Format and Transport model
Note that it is the responsibility of the server to transcode if necessary.

H just got back from a trip.... hence delay in responding.

@ Grahamlthopson - will try medianInfo

@ REASSAC - Some WMV files play others don't.

The reviews I have read say it supports most formats (so they seem to have it all wrong) these reviews is what I based my purchase on

    SEE 1. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/digital-tv-recorders/humax-freesat-hdr-1000s-1094623/review/1#articleContent
state 'Supported video formats include MKV, AVI, WMV and MP4. The system also plays MP3s with album art. The HDR-1000S can even stream across a network. Select Media Share and the box will scour your network for compatible servers. It discovered my NAS without problem and duly played MKV and AVI files.'

    and 2. ALSO at http://www.trustedreviews.com/humax-hdr-1000s_TV-recorder---set-top-box_review_menus-and-remote_Page-4#tr-review-summary

States ' The list of supported video formats is excellent. The Humax HDR-1000S tackles AVCHD, XviD, DivX, hi-def AVI, MKV, MP4, and WMV HD, although playable music formats are limited to MP3 only. The media playback menus are superb, displaying logical lists against sophisticated background graphics.'

Names like MKV AVI etc are only containers. The actual video and audio contained can vary widely. If the magazine tested say an AVI with video and audio content the box understands it will play. Others won't because it doesn't have the necessary codecs.

If you open one that won't play using Medianinfo and export the tree view analysis of the contents and then paste the results into a reply, may be explain why it won't work and if conversion may be possible.

I'm guessing you downloaded this using iplayer? It won't stream files that are drm protected.

Tversity is a good media server that will recode a video for you if it's in a format that it won't play. It still can't stream drm protected content

The clue is in the word encryption.
