Looking at the commands I posted to delete the database file (these came from the Hummy.TV wiki I linked to in the same post) I think that you might not need maintenance mode just to delete the file (you do need it for the full disk check). If you manage to get logged back in, don't select maintenance mode, but go straight for 'cli' option and try running the commands.

Thanks for the tip, but I have failed three times to log-in. All attempts started from cold with the HDR having had no power for at least one hour beforehand. Is it time to give up?

Ping fails but display shows Custom Firmware 3.03 on boot. HDR IP when last seen was 192.168.1.2

Ping fails but display shows Custom Firmware 3.03 on boot. HDR IP when last seen was 192.168.1.2If ping is failing then telnet has no chance. If you look at the router is the light for the port the Humax is connected to illuminated (and similarly for the PC)? This still feels to me like a networking problem rather than a hardware issue on the Humax.

I agree, it is a connection problem, but I have concluded the fault lies at or after the ethernet port of the HDR. I have substituted cables and successfully connected another device by ethernet using all combinations of router ports and cables. That device connects in all combinations, the HDR fails to connect at all.
The HDR has connected correctly, but fleetingly. This suggests the fault is more likely to be due to a failing component rather than the ethernet port itself.

I tried again this morning but there was no connection. More in hope than expectation, I entered the short lived IP manually. The unit connected and I was able to login with Putty. Following MontysEvilTwin's advice (25 Jan, 11:53) the first command was apparently successful but the resukt of the second was rm: can't remove '/mnt/hdl/filebglastop.dat': No such file or directory. There is no longer a connection so that may be the reason the second command failed. The HDR display still shows the Firmware message.

rm /mnt/hd1/filebglastop.dat ie the character after hd is a numeric one "1" not a lower case "l"

Started again, the correct IP still held.Telnet commands all worked. After the reboot, the HRD was powered off and returned to the stand under the main TV. Antenna, HDMI and power were all reconnected and start up was normal; permanent deleting has gone. Every function checked has been OK.
Is it known what condition, or method of operation, could have caused the fault? I would go out of my way to avoid it in future.
Very many thanks to all concerned, I am deeply grateful for all the help, so patiently given.

I don't think anybody knows for certain. It is often associated with corruption of the file system which is why the recommended method is to use fix-disk to hopefully remove any file system errors. It might be worth pointing a web browser at the Humax IP address and see if you can install the full web interface for the custom firmware (wireless connection can be used). This will then allow you to look (Diagnostics>Hard drive) at the physical health of the hard drive.
