Hi Johnway, did you phone Humax Support or email? How did they come to the decision of offering a replacement? How long had you had the HDR 1000S? I've had mine 5 years.
I have been talking to a friend who thinks it might be a capacitor, either in the power supply of the main board. I have absolutely no understanding of this but would be interested in comments.
    Thanks

Your friend is right, as power supply eloctrolytic capacitors of poor quaulity are often an issue (especially those from one maker (Capexon). One Humax box did use these (Foxsat-HD). The internet has many links to cheaply replace these - Early Sky-HD boxes made by Thomson (no connection) had the same issue. However all the affected boxes boxes have a external power supply which delivers 12V DC to the box are effected with all the capacitors used to provide smooth DC to the box are external and easily checked by substituting a good power supply from a working box does not solve the issue. Boxes that have this issue are normally ones that convert mains AC inputs to both 5V DC and 12V DC. All the capacitors involved in the conversion from the mains AC input to smooth DC are internal. A swap to to a fully working external power supply would be an immediate fix. Basically a PVR uses two basic voltages (12V for the HDD drive motor and 5V for the electronics. 12V comes from the external power supply and is a seperate connection to the HDD. 5V is a different connection. The problem is likely connected to the 5V power rail that powers the HDD sata controller that could well be a resistor issue. A resistor a resistor is a linear device that reduces the voltage according to ohms law by the current passing through it be it AC or DC. AC current is specified by it's RMS value (Root mean square). If you connect a DV voltmeter across a 1 ohm resistor passing 1 amp DC it will measure 1 volt. The same voltmeter designed set tomeasure ac (RMS) voltage will record 1V, In both cases the power generated in the resistor is voltage times voltage - 1 watt.

The situation with an ac circuit with inductance and capacitance is totally different.

A G2 box should work with suitable convertors from a car battery supply.

Novel calculation GLT. I suspect you mean voltage x current = power (VxI =W). But you could use V squared/R and still come up with 1 Watt

I emailed Humax Support with this :
    Good Afternoon,
Two days ago both of my Humax boxes (HDR-1010S & HDR-1000S), which are on separate LNBs, lost all recordings – why? is the big question.
I have since reset both HDR’s to factory defaults, reformatted the 1010S’ disc and power cycled both HDR’s overnight. The 1010S is now working & recording OK.
The 1000S on the other hand does not recognise it’s internal HDD, so will not record/pause TV or allow reformatting – again, why ?
I will greatly appreciate answers to what I have seen are not uncommon problem plus, appropriate action required to have my HDR-1000S fully functional again.

I received this response after a few days:
    Thank you for contacting Humax.
Sorry you are experiencing this issue.
This would mean your HDD is faulty or a fault has developed in the software preventing the box from recognising the HDD. Sadly there is no fix for this.
There is an out of warranty exchange service for this particular issue, if your HDD is 500gb it would cost £56 or if you have a 1TB it would cost £66 to exchange and you would get a 6 month warranty.

I then received this from Humax Support after I advised them I wanted to take up their £56 exchange service :

At this moment in time I have checked the stock level and we are unable to offer the exchange at this moment, it could be a few weeks as we are on a back log at the moment.
When we are back in stock you will be notified accordingly.
To help the process can you please provide the 14 digit serial number from your Humax box, A contact number and your full address please.

I have owned the HDR-1000S since Nov 2015 and the HDR-1010S since July 2016.

Hope this helps and I wish you luck JudyP.

Thanks, they have now offered me the replacement, but haven't got to the point where they say they don't have any! Do you know if you have to send your old one back for the replacement?

My recordings have, however, reappeared! which I see on other forum posts does happen. Not expecting it to last though.

Judy P, I would be very surprised if they did not want the old one back as they must obtain machines from somewhere to refurbish (especially those models which are no longer in production). I suggest you email Humax Support saying you want to take up their offer for a replacement (assuming you want to) and see what they have to say.
As for your recordings re-appearing, this would seem to confirm the problem as being a hardware error - however, this may be either the mother board or the HDD. Personally, I would hang on for a Humax replacement box as this could work out cheaper in the long run. A refurb. box would be guaranteed to at least work for 6 months.
Check out Richer Sounds for Humax with a 6 year guarantee if you can't wait. Please keep us posted and good luck.

I believe their practice is to arrange an exchange. The delivery guy will unpack the replacement and repack the old unit.
