I've never managed to play .mkv files via the Media Share -- I just get the "Not supported file format" message.
Is there some setting I've overlooked?
Thanks.

No setting .MKV is a container format. Without knowing what digital compression codecs the video and audio it contains used, no way of even guessing why they don't play or suggest a way you can make them compatible.
You can find this information using the free MediaInfo programme and selecting treeview. You can export this info as a text file and post the text.
https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download
Information on what video and audio each container can use is here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_container_formats
If you look up .MKV (Matroska Video) you will see it can use virtually any audio and video compression codec.
Long shot try changing the file extention to .mp4

Hi Graham
Many thanks for the prompt & helpful reply.
So far all the .mkv files I've checked with MediaInfo have been in H.264/AVC format.

Not enough info. What resolution and frame rate, what audio codec. Treeview gives a detailed analysis of both audio and video.

Suspect the TV or box doesn't like the framerate. Is the TV 24p capable, early HD Ready TV's weren't. You can try changing the container to .ts though you may need to replace the AAC audio with ac3 depending on what you are using for audio. A AV receiver should be fine a TV you will have to experiment. (use .ts rather than .m2ts). If it is the TV you will have to remux to 25fps.
https://www.winxdvd.com/resource/mkv-to-m2ts-for-ps3-with-tsmuxer.htm
My HDR1000S will play 24fps at 25fps but the video is a bit jerky (I use a blu-ray player to avoid this).
It's a bit of a odd combination with AVC NTSC SD (480P) resolution, 24p framerate and aac audio.
Many thanks for your further help & suggestions.
The TV is fine with whatever .mkv's I throw at it. Indeed, my current solution for playing them is to stick them on a USB drive and plug that direct into the TV.
