I've been out and bought a usb downloaded the files and now the box won't boot up at all. If owners are having to go through all this to use these things are they fit for purpose?

A little more info would help

Did the upload of software proceed as per the instructions?

Did you wait until software update complete was displayed on TV, and/or END on the front display?

    Have you removed the pendrive?

What exactly is happening when you now try to boot the device?

When I turn the unit on it shows the freeview logo and then just a black screen for about 5 minutes then the subtitles appear with no sound or picture.

The upload of software didn't work either held the down arrow when switching on and it just flicks endlessly through the channels.

I haven't removed the pen drive.

The installation won't start never mind finish.

It really should be made clear to purchasers that if you are not extremely technically astute you won't be able to operate this.

The box has to completely in sby before you can update by usb. If you look at the pen drive on a PC does it have a recycle bin on it ?

If so chack the box doesn't have a recording schedule due or active. Put it in sby and leave it for 15 minutes.

Reformat the pen drive and copy the .hdf to it again.

Follow the instructions again (if the usb drive access led lights when you plug it in it's not in full sby and you will have to start again).

Updates on the box have caused regular problems from launch. The present one is by no means unique. On the discontinued Freesat forum there were many requests for a Manual or Automatic update selection at the users choice. The Automatic offering the user a yes/no to update, rather than the Freesat method of updating in the background. I have many technology items and the Humax boxes are unique in being the only ones that do not offer a choice. The continued refusal to offer this is arrogance on the part of Freesat.

I've no idea what you are talking about. I'll return my 2 boxes and dongles and go back to sky.
